Dad with insomnia: Schedule appointment with his primary care doc. To refer for sleep study and possibly to a urologist, to explore for treatable causes of insomnia.

See below: If he has not, he needs to see his doctor for an evaluation, and possible sleep study. Also, if he is waking frequently to urinate, he may have an increase in the size of his prostrate gland, which also need to be evaluated.

Sleep study: Tour father should be seen by a doctor, who will probably set him up with a sleep study. This way the testing should help determine if he has sleep apnea and to what severity. Treatment will depend upon these results and his medical history.
