A 47-year-old member asked:
Is cirrhosis of the liver considered the worst way to die?
1 doctor answer • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. Joel Gallant answered
Infectious Disease 36 years experience
Not the worst: If you've ever watched "the tudors" or "braveheart, " you'll see that there are worse ways to die. Cirrhosis is no picnic though, especially when complicated by ascites (fluid in the abdomen) and esophageal varices (which can cause massive GI bleeding), hepatic encephalopathy is less unpleasant, as it causes progressive somnolence and eventual coma.

A 39-year-old female asked:
My dad has been hospitalized with varices due to cirrhosis. His liver is partially dead liver. We don't know %age. What can we expect at this point?

Dr. Ed Friedlander answered

He's bought time: I'm glad that you are there for dad, whatever may have been the cause of his cirrhosis. Variceal bleeding has a much better prognosis than in the past, and even us old-time pathologists now recognize that cirrhosis itself often partly reverses if the underlying cause can be found and treated. There are no guarantees, but perhaps this is a turning-point on a road to a much better life.

My mom is still smoking after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Will this affect her or cause her to die sooner?

Not related: Smoking does not really contribute to developing cirrhosis, and as far as I know, doesn't alter its course. It can itself cause other problems which may shorten life, and nicotine may have drug interactions with some of the medications used to treat cirrhosis. If your mother drinks alcohol, she must stop. There are medical treatment that depend on the kind of cirrhosis. Recommend smoking cessation
