Bruxism: Clenching or grinding the teeth is called bruxism. It often leads to pain in the jaw joint or tmj. It is often habitual, but relaxation therapy, massage and biofeedback can be helpful. In order to not wear your teeth down, a lot of patients wear a bite guard or bite block. If pain in the jaw joints does occur, a few things hat help include a soft diet, not chewing gum anti-inflammatories.

TMJ: To control the pain, moist heat compress near your ear. Avoid opening wide, chewing gum or anything hard. See your dentist.

No quick fix: Clenching occurs during the day, grinding of the teeth at night. There are many variables involved with clenching and by becoming aware of it often causes one to clench more. A daytime splint (mouthpiece) can help, but i would recommend a custom one, not an otc mouthpiece. You really should be evaluated to determine the best options, with a thorough history and an exam.

See Dentist: Often dental splint. In some cases, your doctor may suggest taking a muscle relaxant before bedtime, for a short period of time. Elavil (amitriptyline) has been proven to inhibit clenching and grinding for some. Botox injections may help some people with severe bruxism who don't respond to other treatments
