Virus infection: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an infection of the unborn baby which can produce low birth weight, occasionally spontaneous abortion. It can also produce microcephaly (small brain size), jaundice and other severe changes in the newborn. This is a common virus which is often routinely screened for in pregnant women.
