CMV is a virus: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus member of the Herpes virus family. In immunocompetent people infection is generally asymptomatic or you can have a mononucleosis type syndrome. In immunodeficient people or in young infants, it can cause severe infection, including CMV meningitis, which is an infection of the tissue surrounding the brain or CMV encephalitis, which refers to infection of the brain.
