A member asked:

What are the tests for cmv brain infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Viral cultures, etc: The diagnosis is mostly done by tissue and peripheral blood leukosytes. These can take weeks. Other tests, like urine and saliva are not reliable, and ab titers can take 4 weeks. For CNS infections like viral meningitis and encephalitis, PCR testing provides rapid, sensitive, and specific identification of CMV and other viruses.
