Sometimes: It is thought by many that a common route to alcoholism is the desire on the part of the individual consuming alcohol to reduce the experience of anxiety. There is a conventional wisdom that states that alcohol does promote a reduction in anxiety although its effects can be short lived and there can be rebound anxiety as well if one tries to suddenly reduce consumption of alcohol.
