Yes: Not doing procedure will cause speech problems and may also lead to recession of the gums on the inside of the lower front teeth. It is a very simple procedure that can be done by a pediatric dentist, periodontist, oral surgeon or perhaps your pediatrician if he is well versed in the procedure. Most general dentist do this on an older child but don't have the means to perform this on an infant.

Maybe, maybe not: Depends a lot on the tie. If prominent and causing problems with latching to breast feed, i will do a simple frenulotomy (release) in our procedures room if the tie is not very thick or vascular. If thick or vascular, I have the ENT doc do it.Some ties are minor and the tip of the tongue passes easily over the lower gum without bending. These kids often bf well and the tie loosens with age.

Probably not: Frenulotomy is the surgical cutting of a membrane under the tongue. It used to be done fairly routinely if the baby appeared to be tongue-tied. I only recommend it if the patient has been referred by a lactation consultant or a speech pathologist. I refer these patients to an ENT surgeon for the safest surgical procedure.
