Best to wait: At 6 weeks of pregnancy, i would only do emergency treatment to get you out of pain and the do the root canal in your second trimester. Using a leaded apron, radiographs are safe, but it's best to wait until 2nd trimester for dental treatment.

X-rays are okay.: With the proper precautions, having dental x-rays during pregnancy is safe. It is much better for you to be in good dental health during pregnancy. When the dentist takes the x-ray, make sure a lead apron with a thyroid collar is used and you and your baby should be fine.

Dental X-Rays with: Abdominal shielding are just fine. Check with your ob/gyn about possible antibiotic prophylaxis before the dental work or delaying it.

Pregnancy: Since it is an emergency, it is ok to get a root canal. Some obs will request no epinephrine. You can get out of pain and have the root canal finished in your second trimester if there are concerns. It depends on the patient, i.e. Level of dental anxiety, health conditions, high risk pregnancies, etc.

Why?: I have performed endodontics on all types of difficult teeth at all stages of pregnancy without complications. Radiation is a non factor with the films we use today and with a shield. Make sure a microscopically trained endodontist treats your case! it is always protocol for the endodontist to get clearance from your obgyn.
