Congratulations. : Congratulations. With approval from your OB physician, routine dental care can be provided safely for both you and your baby during the second trimester. Your physician will identify which medications will be safe for you to take. It is better to treat dental disease before it escalates to an infection which has greater potential to be harmful to your pregnancy.

You : You should check with your obstetrician, but i dont think it is good for you or your baby for you to hava an active infection. I see no problem with your having this treatment in your third trimester. Again, check with your md.

As : As a rule, dental treatment should be avoided during pregnancy, "just to be safe." the first trimester should be avoided, and second trimester is best. Third is usually avoided mostly for comfort (pressure of the baby on the spine or mothers blood flow). When weighing risks and benefits, an infection during pregnancy is usually worse than the treatment itself, and if a root canal is indicated and you are 6 months along, you likely should have the treatment. I would suggest running it by the ob, but you are likely safe.

Do it now: Best time for dental rx during pregnancy is 2nd trimester. Ck with your obgyn first, but there should be no harm to either you or your baby. Of greater risk is having the chronically infected tooth progress to an acute problem that would require more rx and more medication than the root canal rx. Please have your problem addressed now, and enjoy every minute of your new baby.
