Quick not thorough: Crown margins are visible on the x-rays, however the x-rays are 2-dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional object, so he/she should've checked in the mouth. Also, he/she should do a soft tissue oral cancer exam as well as checking the grooves of your teeth and integrity of existing fillings. There are several things that show up in the mouth that don't show up on x-rays.
