Gingivitis/Periodont: Swelling, bleeding of gums are classical symptoms of gingivitis and if there is lost of attachment it is called periodontitis. It is very unlikely to die from an abscess but it is possible. Any kind of infection which an abscess is needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Very rare: Only when the swelling cause any kind of airway obstruction (lymph adenopathy bilaterally and pronounced swelling of the neck) as in lugwig angina, a cellulitis condition when there is an infection in the floor of the mouth beneath the tongue. Patient feels "strangling" thus termed "angina".
