Follow up!: This is a great question for your dentist or hygienist. If you had a recent exam and cleaning/maintenance visit an assessment would have been made as to the health of your gums. Do 3 things: 1. Ensure you've had your gums checked within the last several months, 2. Brush & floss daily; be gentle & thorough, 3. Contact your provider right away; don't show up for treatment unprepared.

Gum disease: If you have gum disease it MUST be resolved before accomplishing restorative treatment. Call you Dentist immediately. You may need time, treatment, or referral to a gum specialist, a Periodontist. Let your Dentist examine you and make the best choice with you.

Inflammation: All inflammation and pathology should be cleared up before any restorative treatment begins. I would recommend that you have a periodontal evaluation and certainly a good, thorough professional cleaning.
