Gum disease: One of the main causes of gums being swollen and bleeding is gum disease. Regular brushing and flossing along with over the counter mouth rinses should be the only treatments that you need to do at home. Your dentist can check to see if you have gum disease. If your condition gets resolved from the brushing and flossing then it could have been gingivitis. Your dentist can let you know.

Many things: First i would recommend you see a dentist to find out why they are bleeding and see what the recommended treatment is. At home, regular brushing 2-3x/day, flossing, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash will help. It usually takes 2-3 weeks of regular maintenance to notice a change in the gums. A water irrigation device like a waterpik is also very helpful. But first, see a dentist!
