No need for surgery : Its likely TMJ which can be treated with conservative treatment, specific exercises, dental appliances, and even manipulation. Surgery is last resort.

TMJ: This is what is referred to as TMJ or tmd. Surgery is not recommended, unless you are in extreme pain and this is often used as a last option for treatment. Often times TMJ popping can be caused by a bite discrepancy. Have a dentist versed in bite analysis evaluate your bite.

Probably no, but: Most likely you are experiencing slippage of a doughnut-like cushion in your jaw joint. Try to limit this popping sound from occurring . Pain may occur in the future... See your dentist to see if this is treatable!

Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
