Both: Honestly, both are bad injuries. A compound fracture is old terminology - current terminology is open fracture, meaning the fracture has protruded through the skin - these fractures have a high risk for infection and nearly always require surgery. A "shredded" knee is somewhat vague but suggests either a terrible soft tissue injury or extensive ligamentous injury or both.
