I think my brother is depressed. he stays awake at night and sleeps all day. he is very pessimistic and hates med so he won't see doc. how can i help?

Encourage him: You can still encourage your brother to seek help for himself. First step could be with a psychologist for evaluation. This would not involve medications, although depending on what the psychologist feels, s/he could recommend consultation with a psychiatrist. Psychotherapy can be very helpful with depression. You can also encourage him to not drink alcohol or use drugs, if he's doing that.

Talk to him: Ask him carefully if there is something you can help him with. Try to make a connection. Tell him there are many ways to help with sleep disorders - not only medications but also cognitive behavioural therapy cpt, for example.
