Dental evaluation: Severe pain, generally 2-3 days following the extraction of a tooth, when there was less pain prior, is a typical indication of a dry socket. A trip to the dentist who can place some medication in the socket usually relieves pain and causes natural healing to resume quickly. If in doubt, have your dentist take a look as it is always better to be safe than sorry.

No immediate pain: The pain at the socket is improving during the first few days after tooth removal then abruptly reversing to excruciating sharp, shooting pain and bad smell from the mouth.
