Common concern: If this occurred within the past few days, try giving it about 2 weeks for gum tissue to resolve as it can be irritated during crown placement. Anything really beyond that you should consult with the same doctor first. It may be leftover cement, a poorly contoured crown, or you may have simply gotten something stuck in the gums. Usually these are simple solutions and just require a follow up.

Should heal: It is quite common for there to be some irritation at the gum line with a new crown. This usually goes away in about a week. You should do everything you can to keep, this area clean while it is healing. Be gentle when brushing, rinse with mouthwash to help kill bacteria. If this area does not heal quickly then call your dentist and have this area checked the cause. There may be some cement left.

Crown: Unless it worsens if its still there after 2 weeks, then your dentist should be alerted, most things get better in that time.

Surgery: preparing a damaged tooth for a crown and placing the crown is a surgical procedure, requiring manipulation and recon touring of the tooth and supporting tissues. Gums should feel a little better every day. If still problematic after 10 days - 2 weeks, ask your Dentist to reevaluate.

Not uncommon: Gum sensitivity is not uncommon after a crown is placed. I would say that you should give it more time. However, if any tooth structure is showing between the margin of the crown and the gumline, see your dentist for post-op appointment.
