Thyroid scan: A tiny amount of radioactive iodine (rai) is given to light up the thyroid. They measure the uptake of rai: high, low, normal. High is typical in hyperthyroidism, esp graves. Low may mean thyroiditis. The scan also indicates structure: nodules (functioning, or not), homogeneous uptake, etc. This test needs to be interpreted alongside thyroid levels, symptoms, exam, ultrasound, etc.
