Complex!: The key is your heart rate, and all exercises can elevate the hr to the same level at the required intensity. The difference is perception of exertion, one factor being the build up of lactic acid. The more muscle mass engaged, the lower the perception of exertion. Example: cross country skiing, better than running. Rowing, better than swimming. Obviously you must like the activity!
