How is a 4 month old tested for strep throat?

Strep throat.: A rapid strep test can be done in the doctor's office. If the result is negative (it has about an 85% or so accuracy rate), but the doctor still suspects strep, then a throat culture can be done which is the "gold standard", and the result takes 48 hours to grow out the bacteria.

Very Rare: Dr malinchak's answer is the best. Keep in mind strep is very, very rare in a 4 month old.

Same as when 10: This is not routinely done because infants are known to commonly carry strep without producing disease. Also the rheumatic fever we worry most about with strep does not occur with their immature immune system. When it is done it is usually to placate a worried mom, making many receive treatment for strep when their throat irritation is likely viral.Days later when the viral rash comes, virus or rxn?
