I've seen here that hepa is a standard in air purifiers, but am confused with marketing specs. any ent or pulmonologist recommended brands for <$100?

Unlikely: Dust, pollen, dander and mold spores are hepa filterable, though smoke, virus & bacteria are not. $100 would be on the low end for an effective unit.
