A member asked:

What is the best test to point toward (or rule out) possible al amyloidosis? serum free light chain assays or urine free light chain assays?

Neither: If there is a real concern about al amyloidosis as a cause of your neuropathy, i would not settle for less than a pathology study with biopsy, though not necessarily of nerve. Good luck. Finding free light chains in the serum is neither all that sensitive nor all that specific, though it would have relevance perhaps to other health concerns.

Amyloidosis: They are both useful in helping physicians monitor the disease, but a tissue biopsy may be necessary to completely rule out the disease.
