Diet does not help: Diet has little effect on the serum uric acid level in spite of what other doctors may tell you. You get gouty attacks because your serum uric acid level is too high. The best approach is to speak with your doctor and start Allopurinol to lower the level to less than 6.0 mg/dl. Colchicine should also be used to prevent attacks until the uric acid level is stable in the normal range.
