Gout: Gout is caused by either the body producing too much uric acid or the body's inability to eliminate enough excessive uric acid via the kidneys.. Certain foods can increase the amount of uric acid in the body and cutting down on those foods can help prevent gout attacks. However, chronic gout from renal disease may require you to take medication daily.

Gout: Long term medication is quite normal for people with gout. The reason is it helps prevent uric acid increase which will prevent further attacks of this extremely painful problem. Get your blood checked and if low enough your doctor may take you off. Once you get an attack its very likely to get more so the long term meds will help prevent another attack.
