Gum reaction to: Orthodontic hardware is fairly common. The most important concept is to maintain optimum oral hygiene during your ortho treatment. There are also some patients who have allergic reactions to the metal makeup of the hardware/bracket. Please point out this concern to your orthodontist at your next visit.

Brush and floss: It is very important to clean your teeth well while you have braces to avoid puffy gums. Electric toothbrushes and water pics will help with this. Have your teeth cleaned regularly. Your orthodontist, general dentist and dental hygienist will help you find the tools that will work best for your mouth and in your hands. It can be challenging to keep your mouth healthy during braces. Keep it up.

Have it checked: Braces can irritate tissues and cause swelling, but so can food debris caught around the braces. Have orthodontist check it and perhaps debride the area. Keep mouth scrupulously clean while braces on (and after).
