Reasonable to take: It is possible that your father would be in good shape without taking vit e but it is reasonable to start taking it. There are very impressive research studies showing the benefits of vit e preventing heart disease etc. See http://www.Healthy.Net/scr/article.Aspx?Id=557 it is crucial to take only natural e with mixed tocopherols. Studies on synthetic e (dl-alpha tocpherol) suggest it's harmful!
