A member asked:

I finally agreed to 40mg simvistatin for the last year. at my 6-month appointment a couple months ago, he blindly decided to put me on a stronger statin (40mg rosuvistatin), without seeing a new lipid panel. my total cholesterol is 97. do i need it??

We rarely switched a 40 mg of simvastatin to a 40 mg of rosuvastatin, especially when lipid panel was not checked with the previous medication. For a patient with history of coronary heart disease, especially with type 2 diabetes mellitus, we prefer the LDL cholesterol as low as possible but not with total cholesterol less than 100. By strength, simvastatin 40 mg = 20 mg or less of rosuvastatin.
