A doctor has provided 1 answer

The herpes virus is most likely still in her system although dormant. HSV1 can still be transmitted by skin to skin contact even when there are no eruptions. Of course transmission is more likely when an outbreak is present. Most of us have been exposed to HSV1 in childhood but most people aren't prone to develop cold sores. Genetics play a role.
