A member asked:

What is the safest way to treat constipation while following a low residue diet for 6 weeks post-diverticulitis? already drinking 80oz of water, and eating less than 6g of fiber/1300cal, daily?

If you have little or no urge for BMs, try taking a gentle bowel stimulant like senokotS daily according to the instructions. Avoid laxatives if possible. Ask your physician, surgeon or gastroenterologist if you can take metamucil daily to provide fiber without stirring up diverticulitis. Regular exercise can help.

Gradual physical exercise remains the safest in dealing with constipation, specifically avoiding prolonged seating. Otherwise would clear any possible laxatives with your treating gastroenterologist or primary care doc based on details of your condition and previous response.
