Yes, the anus and rectum can be infected with HPV. In women, it happens either by migration of virus from the genital area or by anal sex. Some infections produce anal or rectal warts and also raise the risk of anal cancer. But like genital HPV, most anal HPV infections do not result in warts or cancer and are eliminated by the immune system. Discuss with your gyn doctor if you remain concerned.
