A member asked:

Is it possible to diagnose dementia many years before it fully affects the brain? is early treatment successful? my parents are in their 60s and my grandma has full on dementia and i want to make sure my parents arent affected. its my biggest fear?

There are some cognitive tests which can be done to diagnose but there is yet no reliable test to predict dementia. Let your parents lead a healthy life with exercise and good nutrition and your love.

Yes, we can get a fairly good idea if we obtain PET scans showing abnormal metabolic patterns, especially if your parents show early signs of "mild cognitive impairment". Blood studies for tau protein and amyloid are being developed and may be helpful. There is NO early treatment, and the newest experimental drugs are minimally effective and in some cases, deadly!
