A member asked:

My mother suffers schizoaffective disorder that caused her dementia. seems both feed each other. besides medicines, cognitive therapy would help her, how to improve her brain health? i think dementia prevents her from abandon her manic ideas from sd?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Dementia is the general term for cognitive dysfunction, and this encompasses numerous structural brain disorders, and toxic and inflammatory conditions, with the classic culprit Alzheimer's disease. Schizoaffective Psychosis is a psychiatric disorder and does NOT cause classical dementia. If this is confusing, a second opinion should be sought. Are her symptoms secondary to her medication?
