Refeeding syndrome is defined as the typical clinical complications that occur due to fluid and electrolyte shifts during nutritional rehabilitation of significantly malnourished patients. In other words, these shifts are due to eating after a period of starvation, it is not specific for a type of food. The goal is to slowly increase calories to a goal of 1400-1600 calories and monitor symptoms.
