You have to weigh the benefit against the risk all the time like you said. It is relatively safe otherwise they would not attempt to use it at all. There is an oversight to make sure of that. The contrast makes it easier for them to be able to report what may be going on in your pelvis to cause what your complaint; unless you are in a research study. You also be monitored after for side effects.

MRI with contrast are safe as newer dyes are available and used now. Contrast highlights abnormalities if present for better diagnosis that's why they are used. Technician just follows the Radiologists orders and does not have control over them.

You should discuss with your doctor as they write the order not the technician. If it has already been done then just check your kidney function as there is a rare kidney issues with MRI IV contrast.
