Depends: Depends upon the specific type of MRI and the reason for it to be ordered- some are with a contrast media - not the same used for ct scans and x-rays - and some are not. As i understand it, the contrast goes through the body, and the signal of the particular organ getting the MRI picks it up.

See below: Most MRI examinations of the head are done without contrast. Depending on the reason you need the MRI the physician may use contrast to improve the diagnosis. For mr angiogram (mra) the study may be done with or without contrast depending on the technique that is used. If you need contrast the injection is in a vein (usually in your arm) not in your head.
