A member asked:

What is debris in a thyroid biopsy? nodule biopsied and dr said first samples were debris. where could it come from? cloudy yellow he said. ct scan a month prior showed nothing abnormal, us showed small lump. i think beside thyroid, blood test normal?

Debris just mean that the product got squashed so they could not make out a form or define the nature of the cells. It may be that the cells got destroyed by the technique or how the specimen was stored or it could be that they aspirated in an area of necrosis of cells or the thyroid center area because of the blind nature of the needle aspiration.

The material recovered at biopsy is not useful for diagnosis. The area "biopsied" may have non-viable tissue that would show up as debris on histological examination. It does not provide any information.
