Would a normal lipase and amylase rule out chronic pancreatitis? can a person with chronic pancreatitis have normal levels?

Pancreatitis is diagnosed on the basis of a physical exam showing tenderness in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, lab tests in which liver enzymes are elevated, and imaging (ultrasound/CT) which show inflammation and enlargement. Acute pancreatitis will show elevated amylase and lipase, but after significant function loss (chronic), they may return to what is considered normal levels.

Yes. If the gland has scarred over from chronic inflammation, the pancreatic enzymes may not be elevated, despite chronic pancreatitis.
