Pancreatitis is diagnosed on the basis of a physical exam showing tenderness in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, lab tests in which liver enzymes are elevated, and imaging (ultrasound/CT) which show inflammation and enlargement. Acute pancreatitis will show elevated amylase and lipase, but after significant function loss (chronic), they may return to what is considered normal levels.
