Nausea for 1.5mo, doc ordered serum amylase (normal at 40 u/l) & lipase, which was borderline low at 11 u/l (8-78 u/l reference range). suggestive of chronic pancreatitis? info online unclear about significance of borderline low lipase. thanks?

The lipase is within the normal range. If you had pancreatitis, the lipase would become elevated, not low. Lipase varies within the normal range, likely based on dietary intake fluctuations. I don’t think there is any problem with your lipase but have the doctor who ordered the test review the results with you since they have the entire clinical context available to them. Good luck!

All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, a low lipase value is not a cause for concern. Wish you good health!
