A member asked:

Am i at risk for recurrent or chronic pancreatitis if mine was triggered by gastroenteritis? (no pain just had high lipase and amylase from the stomach virus) or no because mine was not due to alcohol? if so, can i drink when levels are normal?

Amylase and lipase are elevated (not strikingly high) in most acute inflammation of the GI tract. These "normal" findings do not put you at risk for acute or chronic pancreatitis. Yes, you can drink when your acute GI illness is over. However, you should know that alcohol intake is a risk factor for pancreatic diseases so you should avoid alcohol if you are so concerned about your overall health.
