A member asked:

If a person has plantar warts, does that mean that since they have a strand of hpv in their body that it can be sexually transmitted since the hpv is in the body? or does it have to be a specific strand of hpv to transfer through sexual contact?

Wart strains are specific to the areas of the body they choose to live in. Plantar wart strains are specific to regular and foot skin. They are superficial invaders, never entering the blood & spreading to other sites like some other germs. Genital wart or other genital HPV strains are spread through direct genital to genital contact.

Plantar warts are a different subgroup from genital warts and the mode of transmission in genital is sexual contact. Any kind of wart can be transmitted by any kind of contact- tho most are prevented by the body's immune system.

The HPV 16 and 18 are the most common sexually transmitted HPV virus. Plantar warts are not sexually transmitted, even though they contain a strain of the HPV virus.
