A member asked:

Are white matter hyperintensities (wml)caused by ms different from those caused by migraines? meaning, are they similar lesions except for their size and location? if not, are the ms lesions a type of brain damage while the migraines lesions are not?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The white matter lesions, especially the T2 findings may be very similar in numerous disorders, but the locations, emergence over time, and patterns can help sort out different diagnoses. There is no one lesion which would be pathognomonic of migraine vrs MS, but rather the films answering clinical questions, and supporting diagnostic conclusions.
