A member asked:

My muscle biopsy has mild neurogenic-type changes, striated muscle fibers with excess fiber size variation, few angulated atrophic fibers, and scattered pyknotic nuclear clumps. they are doing histochemical analysis now will this give me a diagnosis?

It is not easy to answer your question because the histochemical study is essential in reading of the muscle biopsy result. So far, we have known you have a neuromuscular disorder, not a lone myopathy. Please follow with your doctor for a full pathologic report and diagnosis.

Not clear to me as to what muscle disorder is suspected, but further evaluation of muscle biopsies can often be helpful. Some inflammatory muscle diseases can cause "neurogenic-type" findings and can confuse the issue. Key though is to make certain that a neuropathy is or is not present and an EMG plus sural nerve biopsy may be useful.
