A member asked:

How do cardiology referrals work? i currently have a cardiologist, but would like to switch to a different one. if my gp previously sent a referral to a heart and vascular institute, can i see anyone within the network at any location?

You have to decide if you want to go in or out of network. The bottom line is that you should see whom ever you want to see, and getting a second opinion is always a good idea, even if it only confirms the first diagnosis and recommendations. Insurance coverage should not be the deciding factor in selecting good medical care!

Once you pick your cardiologist make sure you ask your GP to make a formal referral to that specific cardiologist and submit pertinent medical records. Alternatively you can ask your present cardiologist to help you get a second opinion.
