Purple toe syndrome is caused by a small clot in the vessels leading to your toe. The discoloration indicates reduced blood flow. To Test whether the cause is reduced blood flow, sit on a step with both feet clearly visible, press gently on the nail of both second toes then let go. Both nails should go from white to pink in the same amount of time. If a clot, the purple nail will be slower.
