Hallux fracture: To reduce the pain apply ice to your toe for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. The only way to find a fracture is to have it X-rayed. The large toe can be splinted to reduce pain by the doctor in the ER. If there is pain or discoloration at the base of your large toe toward the rest of your foot you need to have it x-rayed as this bone is important in supporting your foot.
