No criteria for IV infusion, only if patient fails oral iron due to adverse effects, poor absorption, etc. or sometimes we want to replete iron as quick as possible, e.g. a patient with severe anemia but cannot receive blood due to religious reason.

The CDC does not make recommendations on iron infusions. What are your iron levels? Do you have anemia? We give iron infusions when a patient has clinical reasons for it, such as low ferritin, and or low iron with hemoglobin lower than 7 or has symptoms related to the low iron. When possible we try to use oral iron first.
