Yes, it is only when cirrhosis gets complicated with portal hypertension and splenomegaly when cell counts, including platelets may be affected. In early stages, platelet counts remain normal.

Agree with Dr. P. A person with compensated cirrhosis may have normal platelet counts. Increase in portal blood pressure and an enlarged spleen causes increase destruction of platelets. Platelet destruction also occurs when with advancing liver disease patients develop disseminated intravascular coagulation.
