A member asked:

Why does serum lipase and amylase increase during acute pancreatitis? shouldn't it decrease since there is problem with pancreas (inflammation)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Lipase serum levels: I believe the reasons both rise in the bloodstream is because there is disruption of the pancrease (pancrelipase) and these enzymes get into the blood stream. They are both part of the exocrine function and should not be in the blood steam. The endocrine portion of the organ involves insulin production. This chemical is supposed to be in the blood. The other are designed to be released into the duodenum .
